1. Start with High-Quality Penetrating Oils


Before you even touch a wrench, you should use a penetrating oil to make the job easier. Standard lubricants like WD-40 are great for squeaky hinges, but for rusted fuel lines, you usually need a dedicated penetrating oil.
- Soak it early: Apply the oil well before you plan to do the job. Up to 24 hours is ideal, but even an hour or so will make a difference.
- The Tap Method: Lightly tap the fitting with a small hammer after applying the oil; the vibration helps the fluid wick deeper into the threads.
- Reapply: Spray the fitting multiple times throughout the day to ensure maximum saturation.
A little patience and a lot of penetrating oil may save you hours of drilling out snapped bolts later!
2. Use the Right Wrench
One of the most common mistakes is using a standard open-end wrench. Because these only contact two or three sides of the nut, they are prone to slipping and rounding off fittings. Consider using a flare nut wrench (also known as line wrenches) instead.
Flare nut wrenches wrap around more of the fitting’s hex head, providing a much more secure grip. Never use a crescent or adjustable wrench on a seized line fitting; it's almost always a guarantee for a rounded nut. Occasionally, giving the fitting a tiny nudge in the tightening direction first can break the initial rust seal.
3. The Controlled Use of Heat


When chemical solutions fail, heat is the next trick often used. We don't recommend this method, but if you do decide to apply heat, do it with extreme caution, especially near fuel line systems.
- Expansion/Contraction: Heating the nut expands the metal, which can break the rust's grip on the threads.
- Safety First: Never use an open flame near fuel, flammable vapors, or on fuel lines. If working on brake lines, be aware that excessive heat can boil the brake fluid.
- Induction Heaters: If you have access to one, an induction heater may be a safer alternative to a torch, as it uses electromagnetic induction to heat metal without a flame.
4. The Shock and Vibration Technique
Sometimes a steady pull on a wrench isn't enough, and you need to shock the threads into submission. This is often more effective than raw leverage, which can snap the line entirely.
A manual impact driver (the kind you hit with a hammer) can provide the necessary downward force and rotation simultaneously. Some mechanics use an air hammer with a blunt tip on the surrounding casting (not the fitting itself) to vibrate the rust loose.
