What Signs Should I Watch For If I Suspect My Fuel Lines Need To Be Replaced?

The lifespan of fuel lines can vary based on material, vehicle usage, and environmental conditions. As with any auto parts, superior quality parts like stainless or Galfan® lines are going to last longer. However, if you suspect your lines are failing, the first signs you'll likely notice are a strong fuel odor and/or a puddle of fuel under your car. You might also notice engine performance issues like stalling, hesitating, or difficulties starting you vehicle. Check your lines for visible cracks or wear on the fuel line material. If possible, replace any deteriorating fuel lines as they're likely to fail soon.

Can I Replace Fuel Lines Myself?

Certainly. Replacing fuel lines can be a DIY project as long as you have a few basic mechanical skills, proper tools, and take the necessary safety precautions. At LinesToGo, we offer installation videos for nearly every make and model of fuel lines we sell. Remember, all our lines are pre-bent, so you won't have to attempt to shape them yourself. We ship them in segments so you can assemble and install with ease. (Learn about removing shipping twists or bends). If you need nylon connectors, we can help with that, too. However, always remember you are working with the fuel system of your vehicle and if working near combustibles makes you uncomfortable, it may be safer and more efficient for you to have a professional mechanic handle the replacement, especially on vehicles with pressurized fuel injection systems.

What Materials Are Fuel Lines Made Of, And Which Is Best?

Automotive fuel lines are commonly made from rubber, galvanized steel, aluminum, and nylon - some vehicles even use a combination of these materials for different parts of the fuel system. At LinesToGo, we construct our lines from 304L stainless steel or Galfan® coated steel. These 2 materials are superior because:

  • 304L stainless steel contains chromium to prevent premature rust and corrosion. Stainless steel lines are superior to standard galvanized steel lines because of this chromium content. Standard galvanized steel utilizes an inferior zinc coating that is not as efficient at resisting corrosive elements and rust.
  • Galfan® is a steel treatment and coating process that is an alternative to the common zinc galvanization process that's been used to create galvanized steel for years. Galfan® is an improved alloy combination that's been in use since 1981. Galfan® steel is treated with an alloy combining 95% zinc, 5% aluminum plus specific quantities of rare earth mischmetal. Galfan® steel offers:
  • Proven superior corrosion protection at 1/2 to 1/4 the coating weight of regular galvanized coating.
  • Superior formability.
  • Produces better yield per ton used.
  • Is a greener technology than conventional zinc coatings.
  • Provides an ideal surface finish either exposed or painted.
How Much Does It Cost To Replace Automotive Fuel Lines?

The cost can vary widely based on your vehicle type and whether you're replacing the entire fuel line or just a part. High quality lines will (of course) cost a bit more than cheap versions, but are certainly a worthwhile investment. Rough estimates can range from $100 to $1000, and labor costs can play a significant role. You can certainly save by installing your fuel lines yourself, and our huge catalog of installation videos can help. It's a job you can get done in a day, and our lines arrive in sections to make shipping and installation easier. You can also contact us if you have questions.
