How To Diagnose Rusted Lines Above The Fuel Tank

You don't need X-ray vision to check your lines, but a little geometry helps. A trick commonly used by seasoned DIYers involves a cheap telescoping inspection mirror and a high-lumen LED flashlight. Position yourself near the rear wheel well or directly below the tank. Maneuver the telescoping mirror into the small gaps near the frame access points or crossmembers, and shine your flashlight against the mirror. This will illuminate the top side of the frame rail, allowing you to spot heavy flaking, bubbling rust, or wet spots on the factory steel lines.

3. Use a Borescope Camera

If you want a definitive answer without dropping the tank, it’s time to use technology. For a very affordable price, you can pick up a smartphone-compatible borescope (endoscope) camera. Simply snake the flexible camera wire over the top of the frame rail and along the fuel lines. This will give you a high-definition view of the exact condition of your tubing, letting you know if a proactive replacement is due.
