How To Find Out If You Have Coil Spring Or Torsion Bar Suspension

LinesToGo designs and manufactures factory-matching lines for dozens of imported and domestic vehicles. Whether you need brake, fuel, transmission, or engine cooler lines, we have it all.

Each line is designed to fit like a factory part. No modifications are needed. However, in certain cases, it is important to know your vehicle’s suspension setup so you can order the correct part.

Coil Spring Vs Torsion Bar Suspension

We supply factory-spec lines for many different vehicles. Every line is pre-bent, ready to install, and sectioned where needed. Knowing the type of suspension setup your car has will help you get the right lines the first time.

Coil Springs

  • • Common on passenger vehicles
  • • Mounted close to each wheel
  • • Variable spring rates allow for differing ride characteristics

This is the most common suspension type used on passenger vehicles. It consists of a coil spring and shock absorber mounted to the bodywork. If the shock is inside the coil, it is called a MacPherson strut. When the vehicle goes over a bump, the shock and coil compress to absorb the energy.

Torsion Bar

  • • Used on some Trucks, Pickups, and SUVs
  • • Mounted along the length of the chassis
  • • Space-efficient and durable

The torsion bar suspension setup consists of a narrow steel tube bolted to the wishbone and chassis. This bar will twist when a wheel goes over a bump. Torsion bars tend to be mounted along the length of a vehicle to allow for more wheel travel.
